What is the Fridge.com Appliance Price Index?

It is a matched-model price index for refrigeration appliances published by Fridge.com. It measures how the price of a fixed set of refrigerator and freezer models changes over time, with the base month (May 2024) set to 100. It is computed from the Fridge.com catalog and price history, not from any third-party index.

What data is the index built from?

The set of models comes from the Fridge.com live catalog of active refrigeration appliances. The prices come from NEW-condition retail price observations collected for those models as daily price history and aggregated by calendar month. A separate retailer price-history series is not part of this version.

Why use a matched-model index instead of average prices?

An average of whatever is listed each month moves whenever the product mix changes, even if no individual price moved. A matched-model index compares each model only against itself across consecutive months, so a change in catalog composition cannot masquerade as a price change.

Which categories are published, and which are not?

16 categories clear the publication threshold of at least 30 matched models and carry an index figure. 2 categories are below that threshold (compact freezers and counter-depth refrigerators) and are not published as index figures.

How current is the index?

This release covers May 2024 through June 2026 and was computed in July 2026 under methodology v1.0. The index is computed by calendar month, and each release records its computation timestamp in the dataset metadata.

How the index works

The Appliance Price Index measures how the price of refrigeration appliances moves over time. Rather than averaging whatever happens to be listed each month, it tracks a fixed set of individual models and compares each model only against itself, so a change in which products are stocked cannot masquerade as a price change. The current release covers May 2024 through June 2026.

A category is published only once it has at least 30 matched models in a month. 16 categories clear that threshold in this release; 2 categories are listed but held below the publication threshold.

Fix the model set
Each category tracks a fixed set of individual models from the live Fridge.com catalog. Retailer duplicates and finish variants of one appliance collapse into a single model.

Compare each model with itself
For every pair of consecutive months, only models priced in both months contribute — composition change can never masquerade as price change.

Chain from the base month
The base month, May 2024, is set to an index of 100. A later reading above 100 means the matched models are more expensive on balance than at the base month; below 100 means cheaper.

Treat only the rows marked published as index figures — categories below the 30-model minimum are shown for completeness but carry no published reading.
