Fridge.com summarizes the certified annual energy use of 4,499 ENERGY STAR refrigerators and freezers from 259 brands, and compares every type against the U.S. federal maximum energy-use standard. How to read the index

kWh/yr
Certified annual energy use in kilowatt-hours per year — the tested figure behind a model’s yellow EnergyGuide label. Lower is cheaper to run.
kWh/yr per ft³
Annual energy use divided by total storage volume. It normalizes for size, so a small appliance that sips power can still be inefficient per cubic foot.
Better than federal
How far below the applicable U.S. federal maximum energy use the type falls. Higher means a deeper margin under the legal ceiling.
Most Efficient
Share of the type carrying the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient designation — the top recognition tier within an already-certified set.

Two things the per-cubic-foot view reveals

Small is not the same as efficient. A compact refrigerator draws only 246 kWh/yr at the median, far below a bottom-freezer’s 553 — but per cubic foot it uses 70.7 kWh/yr versus the bottom-freezer’s 27.2. Buying a second small fridge for storage costs more per unit of cold space than one larger unit.

Top-freezers own the top tier. 80.7% of every ENERGY STAR Most Efficient refrigerator in this release is a top-freezer design. The classic freezer-on-top layout remains the most efficient full-size configuration on the market.

How the index is built

The certified models and their tested annual energy use come from the ENERGY STAR certified refrigeration list published by the U.S. EPA and DOE. Fridge.com ingests that list, maps each unit to a Fridge.com appliance type, and computes the category medians, per-volume efficiency, and margin over the federal standard shown here. The underlying certifications are public U.S. government data; the aggregation and the derived measures are the Fridge.com synthesis, published under a CC BY 4.0 license.

4,499 certified models across 10 appliance types qualify in this release, spanning certifications dated January 2014 through February 2026. Of those, 324 are stocked in the Fridge.com catalog. A type is published only once it carries at least 30 certified models.

Known limitations

  • ·Certified-set only: covers models on the ENERGY STAR certified list, which is a self-selected, above-baseline subset of the market, not every model sold. Figures describe certified refrigeration, not the whole catalog.
  • ·The federal-standard comparison uses each unit's applicable U.S. federal maximum energy use as recorded on the certification; 22 records omit the comparison and are excluded from the percent-better measures only.
  • ·Annual energy use is the certified test-procedure value (kWh/yr), not metered household use; real-world consumption varies with ambient temperature, usage, and settings.
  • ·A type is published only when it carries at least 30 certified models; smaller types are disclosed below the threshold and never presented as published benchmarks.

    Start from the ENERGY STAR certified refrigeration list — the tested, above-baseline models the EPA and DOE program publishes, with each unit’s certified annual energy use.

    Type and normalize

    Map every unit to a Fridge.com appliance type, and divide annual energy use by total storage volume to get a size-normalized efficiency figure alongside the raw kWh/yr.

    Benchmark against the standard

    For each type, compute the median energy use, the margin under the applicable U.S. federal maximum, and the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient share — publishing only types with at least the minimum model count.

What does "percent better than the federal standard" mean?

Every certified model has an applicable U.S. federal maximum annual energy use for its class. The percent-better figure is how far below that maximum the model's certified energy use falls. Across the set the median model uses 11% less energy than its federal maximum, and the average is 13.1% less.

Which appliance type is the most energy-efficient?

On energy used per cubic foot of storage, full-size top-freezer and single-door refrigerators are the most efficient designs, while compact refrigerators use the most energy per cubic foot despite their small total draw. Top-freezer models also dominate the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient tier: 80.7% of all Most Efficient certified refrigerators in this release are top-freezer models.
