This report measures how well each appliance class converts it into storage: cubic feet of capacity per square foot of footprint, derived for 845 measured models across 8 classes in the Fridge.com catalog — plus the packaging share, how much of a cabinet’s exterior volume is usable storage. How to read the report
- Space efficiency
- Capacity divided by footprint: cubic feet of maker-stated storage per square foot of floor (width × depth). A median of 3.08 for French-door models means the typical cabinet turns each square foot of floor into about 3.08 cubic feet of storage.
- Packaging share
- Capacity as a percentage of the cabinet’s exterior volume (width × depth × height). The median across all measured models is 49.1% — the rest is insulation, compressor, air channels, and structure.
- Class medians, not model rankings
- Makers record dimensions under differing conventions — with or without handles and doors — so a per-model ranking would reward recording style. Class medians and 10th-to-90th-percentile ranges absorb that noise; no individual model is ranked.
- Coverage
- The ratios need width, depth, height, and capacity: 845 of the 2,437 universe models (34%) clear every gate — the binding gap is capacity, recorded by 1,228 models (50%). The rest are excluded, never estimated.

The class medians side by side. Full-size refrigerators cluster near 3 cubic feet per square foot because they build tall; chest freezers, compacts, and freezerless cabinets sit near 1.2 because they do not. The exact figures, with their ranges and packaging shares, are in the table below.

Bigger cabinets use floor space better
Within the French-door class, storage per square foot climbs steadily with cabinet size — from 2.7 cubic feet per square foot under 20 cubic feet to 3.48 at 29 cubic feet and up, a 28% gain. Walls, insulation, and door hardware are a fixed overhead; the larger the cabinet, the smaller their share of the footprint.

Two things the report shows
Height is the cheapest storage. The classes that build tall — French-door at 3.08, side-by-side at 2.91 — more than double the storage per square foot of the low-slung classes, and upright freezers beat chest freezers by 19% on the same floor area. Chest freezers answer with interiors that need no front door-swing clearance, which footprint figures do not capture.
About half the box is storage. The median packaging share across all measured models is 49.1% — the middle 80% runs 38.9% to 56.3%. French-door cabinets lead the classes at 53%, and upright freezers give up the most to structure at 40.1%.
How the report is built
The universe is the live Fridge.com catalog filtered to refrigerators and freezers — active and publishable (2,437 models in this release). A model is measured once it records a width, depth, height, and capacity inside physical-validity gates (10–75 in wide, 10–45 in deep, 15–90 in tall, 1–40 cu ft, packaging share 15–85%) — figures outside the gates are treated as recording errors and excluded, with the exclusion disclosed.
Space efficiency is capacity divided by footprint; packaging share is capacity divided by exterior volume. Each class publishes the median and the 10th-to-90th-percentile range once at least 20 models are measured. The aggregation is the Fridge.com synthesis, published under a CC BY 4.0 license.

Gate the universe
Filter the live catalog to active, publishable refrigerators and freezers, then keep only models recording all four figures — width, depth, height, capacity — inside physical-validity gates, so a recording error can never masquerade as an efficient design.

Derive the two ratios
For each measured model: storage per square foot (capacity over width × depth) and packaging share (capacity over exterior volume). Both use the figures exactly as the maker records them.

Publish class aggregates only
Roll the ratios up by appliance class — median and 10th-to-90th percentile — publishing a class only at the model threshold. No per-model ranking: recording conventions differ by maker, and medians absorb what a leaderboard would amplify.
