Not all peachy

I replaced my old Whirlpool unit with this one. Unfortunately, the handle doesn't match the companion freezer as it did in the past. Not sure if I will order a new freezer so they match again. My only complaint with the icebox is that those drawers are ridiculously small. I don't know why they couldn't give me one drawer that would go the width of the unit. These drawers don't hold much of anything. And having two setr of racks on the door of the icebox wasts a lot of material. Other than that, I am good with the new iebox.

Ehh its good when its good

This is my 3rd one of these. If we hadn't made the mistake of building our kitchen around them I would of never ordered this one or the last one. However I do love all of the room it does give us especially during the holidays and when we have lots of company. That being said, it is a poor design that is designed to fail. Wish ya'll could get it together on this one because it looks amazing in my kitchen but just not sure in our new home we will go this route again.

Sidekick Refrigerator #3 while the Freezer lasted.

The clear, sticky, plastic wrapping is an absolute pain to remove cleanly and not get exhausted trying to remove it. The sticky blue strips aren't any better, There is a fear of damaging the aluminum finish. Can't you find an easier, yet protective covering? The failure of 2 past sidekick refrigerators is exasperating. The electic system is poorly designed. Overall, we enjoy the sidekicks when there isn't any repairs. The last refirgerator lasted less than 3 years.

This "Side-kick" refrigerator replaces my 36 year old prior one that was still running. It is operating nicely and has advanced features which I like. I also replaced my 36 year old matching prior freezer with a matching "Side-kick" freezer. Thus far, I am pleased with the two units, and i like the new features.

This unit was purchased along with a mating sidekick freezer to replace an existing pair of 19 year old Whirlpool sidekicks that still worked okay, but required frequent re-charging of refrigerant due to system leaks that we were unable to find. The new product sidekick dimensional specs are the same as the old product specs, so we assumed the new units would fit directly into our existing custom cabinetry. However, not shown in the product specs, the new units have thicker doors with a different hinge point, and when we pushed the units into the cabinetry, we found we could not open the refrigerator door more than about 30 degrees, because the unit is located adjacent to a wall next to a framed passageway into a hallway. (The old units with the thinner doors and different hinge point had no issue.) To provide sufficient door swing clearance for the new refrigerator, I had to remove the existing passageway trim, remove a small section of sheet rock, cut back and reinforce the existing 2 by 4 structure underneath, and and then install a trimmed inside corner section. Took me a couple days by the time the new corner and trim was repainted. So word of warning: If you plan to install one of these units adjacent to a wall or corner, be sure to think about door swing clearance.

Well made stand alone tower refrigerator.

Bought this to replace a ten year old Whirlpool Sidekick refrigerator that stopped working. This newer model is infinitely better. Built more solid. Great looks. HOWEVER, my one beef is that the top shelf has a control panel interfering with its use, hanging down from the top of that space and rendering it impossible to put tall things (like a half gallon of milk) in the middle of that shelf space. For those of us who are tall, that shelf is the one we would use the most as the refrigerator is not that tall. So, kind of frustrating. But over all a great machine.

This unit was bought as a replacement for the previous sidekick that failed. Only issue is the door is thicker on the new unit and does not matchup with the freezer to install the grill on the bottom and the attachment plate at the bottom to attach both the freezer and the refrigerator together. The unit is nice and I hope I get many years out of it for the price!

Very pleased with the look and price. Preferred the old interior design. Really don’t need 4 drawers- would have preferred an extra shelf. Overall great buy.

Maximum capacity

Bought this a week ago. Preferred the old style where cheese drawer was in the middle, instead of now having 4 drawers on the bottom. Instructions not very clear on when to add food and what temperature. We had to use highest setting to keep our food at right temp in both fridge and freezer. We like the size and we just need to get use to using it. All of our friends are jealous of it. It is our 3rd set, partly due to fitting in our space.

The new pair are flawless as well. Very happy. Smooth delivery and install direct from Whirlpool. Now I need to think about replacing my flawless, albeit 20 year old, pair of Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer.

We had a set of these Whirlpool sidekicks in white that we bought in 2004 and they still work perfectly we just upgraded to stainless and we're giving the other white set to our daughter that we have had for 19 years and they still look brand new and act it and work branded like they were brand new as well I just hope she has 19 years of service out of them too you don't see that very often we love our whirlpool who has a refrigerator and freezer for 19 years and they still look new and run as good as if they were just purchased I hope I get the same amount of years out of my new stainless set of sidekicks kudos to you whirlpool

I love the Refrigerator, the only problem I have is that is was in a new home I purchased. I guess during installation from the home company it must have been tossed around a bit. One of the adjustments wheels is broke. The door on the refrigerator is out of align and does not seal properly. Trying to get them to repair it has been a nightmare. It is to no fault of the manufacture, the freezer side is great no issues.

We’d been looking for a replacement for the top freezer Whirlpool refrigerator we’ve had for years, and liked the concept of a full refrigerator since the freezer is steps away. We are very happy with the Whirlpool Sidekick full refrigerator—we can see everything on the shelves, and there is enough room to handle family gatherings. For the first time ever, the potato salad, meat salad, and leftovers fit without shifting or throwing out things to make room. The appliance runs quiet, and keeps everything beautifully cold.

This is my second Sidekicks refrigerator. The first one died after nearly 15 years and it was time to replace it. I loved my old one, and wasn't sure if the newer model would be as good. It's not...it's better! There are more drawers and the shelving has been reconfigured to hold even more. My only complain is that it only has one light bulb at the top, and it can get rather dim towards the bottom shelves.

A very nice refrigerator with a classic design. We bought this to use as a secondary fridge, but quite honestly, it is so handsome, I would use as our primary fridge. My ONLY criticism is that the motor is just a bit louder when it kicks on. Otherwise, no issues.

This is the first refrigerator I’ve purchased without a freezer. Couldn’t be happier holds a constant temp throughout the whole fridge.

My old sidekicks refrigerator died after 12 years of great service. This new model fits exactly where the former old fridge was. It is quiet and reached 37 degrees in 6 hours after plugging in. Handle is diiferent from older model. I will order the matching freezer as soon as it is available!

I am extremely happy with the look and working so far of my refrigerator. The only thing is that the door handle was not able to be put on the other side. Also, the Whirlpool sign on the front is crooked. And it took 24 weeks to get after I was told 8 weeks.

We had a lot of trouble with our last Whirlpool Refrigerator. It was needing repair yearly and only 5 years old so are so very happy to get our new Whirlpool. It looks great next to Freezer and has a lot of nice features. As long as it keeps cooling we will be extremely happy! It's hard to recommend till we know if it will work long and better than our last one.

This unit was purchased to replace identical style Black unit that was18 years old and still working. Only replaced because of age of original unit. Really wanted Black Stainless but only available in Stainless, replaced all my appliances to match. Arrived with small dent in door, Shipping Box was not damaged, Factory should put foam panel across the door. Unit working fine after install. Purchased 5 year warranty due to reports of prior units with compressor issues.

I've always had a second fridge in the garage for drinks and larger items, but it's not needed with this fridge in the house. I'd give it five stars, except that it doesn't come with a water dispenser. That would be the cherry on top.

This refrigerator seems very well built. My only concern is ,will it last. My old unit was 54 years old. I’m not overjoyed with the glass shelves; prefer wire. It is definitely large enough for all my needs. The door has a good feel, opens and closes with ease. The stainless steel exterior is easy to clean. The vegetable bins fit all my produce. The shelves are easy to move around. Hopefully I’ll still be happy in 25 years.

We bought the sidekick set when we remodeled our kitchen, the look and space are amazing! Shortfalls; the door design requires additional space for the door to open to the 90 degree angle. It also isn’t counter depth, so if you want the doors to open, it has to stick out several inches from your standard counter depth of 24”.

Happy with new Refrigerator

The first one I had, had a few issues, then just quit working. Whirlpool replaced the unit. The door matches perfectly with the Freezer unit. There is a whirling sound that cycles on and off. A service person came and told me it is temporary and normal for a new unit to have such a sound, and that it will go away. Very happy with the space in this SideKick

When I was shopping for a new fridge, the idea of a freezer-less fridge was such a scary prospect, I almost walked away. Fortunately, the salesman asked me all the right questions and then pointed out that I was gaining way more fridge space than losing convenience (we have a full stand-alone freezer in the basement) -- and it was a more economical option. I am so glad we did buy it. I love having a huge refrigerator space in the kitchen -- and actually think we are eating better because we can store so many more fresh fruits and veggies!

Thank goodness for home warranty programs. I love the frig but when you put something under the light you can't see very well what is on the other shelves. Another light by the 3 shelf would be helpful. It also would be nice to have a door stop so it doesn't bang into my stove. Not sure if it has a notice when the door is open too long but it would be a good addition.

Beautiful Unit But Not Well Built

Has to buy this as a replacement for my old unit. Since the cut-out was of a custom size plus it matches the freezer, I was not able to go with a different unit. These units are great looking, very functional and efficient with shelf space etc. The reason for only giving it 3 stars is because my old (same model) unit failed after about 7 years. I had it completely rebuilt at the 7 year mark (new condenser and compressor) only to have the condenser fail (leaked) just out of the one year warranty. I wasn't happy about that given the investment I made between buying new plus repair cost.

One good, one not so good

We ordered 2 of these. The first one we unpacked and plugged in. All looked and sounded good. The 2nd one not so good. The seal on the door is all messed up and when we plugged it in it has a clicking noise. You would think that someone would have noticed this noise when they plugged it in to make sure it did work. You would also think they wouldn't ship a freezer with a seal that looks like this in the pic I attached. I can't attach video of clicking sound cause I didn't add it to you tube. It reminds me a card being stuck in a bike wheel making a clicking noise as it turns.

Definition of insanity is?

I bought this unit to replace the same model of one that I purchased 3 years ago but failed with a non-repairable internal freon leak. One year warranty is a bummer. I only purchased the same unit so it would match the corresponding freezer unit that I have. Otherwise, I'm not impressed with the quality and reliability of Whirlpool appliances. They used to be much better. I have 4 Frigidaire refrigerators that are over 50 years old and still running great (back when Frigidaire was owned by General Motors by the way).

If you can get them over the three year hump at last 16 to 18 years I've had two sets of these and the refrigerators only last about three years with the freezer last forever. Don't understand theoretically it should only be a thermostat difference. But you can't be 60 inches of refrigerator/freezer for the price.

We have had this unit a few weeks. Previously we a had Frigidaire unit. The whirlpool refrigerator was smaller and not as well made. In order to keep the unit cold enough, we have to keep the unit to the coldest setting. I prefer a dial setting to actually adjust the temperature myself.

Good looks, bad longevity

I bought this less than 2 years ago with our new home build. The design and look of it is nice and sleek. The downside is we have had problems with cooling from day one. The final straw is coming home to spoiled food because it doesn’t cool after we have been gone for 3 days. Frustrated that such a nice and expensive fridge can’t even go 2 years without messing up. Overall, design, functionality, and looks are great. Seems to not have problems earlier than most.

Skeptical

First we like Whirlpool and that was because our previous 1999 Sidekick refrigerator lasted over 23 years and the ONLY reason it was replaced in 2022 was because our 1999 Whirlpool Side Kick Freezer needed replacement and we wanted matching Side Kicks. The Whirlpool Side Kick refrigerator we bought in 2022 only lasted 2 years because it has a SYSTEM SEAL LEAK. The difficulty we had getting it replaced was mostly due to Allstate Protection Plan and NOT Whirlpool. We have had this new identical refrigerator about a month and so far so good, but we are skeptical but hopeful it will last at least 20 + years.

Poor reliability

This is the third one of these SideKick Refrigerators that I have had to buy in the last six years. The compressors and micro boards are not very reliable. I had my kitchen designed around the Side Kick Refrigerator and Freezer as stand alone units, so I am stuck with them unless I remodel my kitchen. I sure hope this one lasts a little longer.

Bought 3 months ago for a replacement of the previous like model which was only 7 years old and only cause of the matching freezer that still works. It makes a loud wining noise that I guess is normal according to the other reviews, but not a deal breaker. Poor design for knowing were the edge of loading should stop before the door storage will come into contact. Door didn't seal well for the first week but somehow seams to be better now. I have two similar Whirlpool freezer downstairs, one was a lemon from day one which they finally replaced under warranty. They need to up their game in refrigerators and freezers. I have a Whirlpool washer and dryer that has been but to the test for many years and has done very well.

This is my 4th sidekick in 20 years. We built a new house and our entire kitchen was designed around this size. We are kind of stuck with these units. This last time we bought the extended warranty. I bought the sidekick set for the size and function. Should have more modern features for the price. It is a step up from the previous set I replaced from 2005. My biggest complaint is the door on the refrigerator does not line up with the cabinet. It sits about 1/2" high. It seals fine but makes it impossible to line up with the freezer sitting next to it.

So far the fridge works. What is disappointing is the delivery and the service. It was missing the mounting bolts for the door when it arrived. I had to call and ask for them. They took a week and I had to install them myself. I also bought the matching freezer and wanted the ice maker for it. After waiting a month for it, It didn’t fit. Whirlpool had given me the wrong part number. After hours on the phone with them, I did a net search and found the correct one.

Stopped working after 2 years

When the frig was turned on for the first time it thought it was a freezer and temp went down to 9 degrees. Fixed now but not happy with the temp range of 35 to 42 degrees. Mostly around 40-41 degrees. Told that was the way all refrigerators work now. Unfortunately I wanted an all frig unit and all freezer unit that matched. This was my only choice for separate units that were no connected.

Our new fridge is making a whooshing sound every 5-8 seconds. It sounds similar to an owl or ghostly wooo lasting 1.5 seconds. It does it for 3/4 of the time it is cooling.

This is the 3rd unit I've had in 16 yrs - kitchen was built with 31" opening which is too narrow for another unit. Nice to have an all fridge (have the matching freezer which has been replaced once) but new design has less storage than the older unit - who needs s frozen pizza rack/holder in a refrigerator? 18 ft today is smaller than 18 ft yesterday.

sidekick all refrigerator

I purchased the refrigerator (not the freezer) in 2003. Within 4 years the compressor broke and had to be replaced - luckily then it was covered by a 5 yr warranty and the compressor was replaced. Now whirlpool only offers a 1 yr warranty. I've had other minor problems with the cooling in the last couple of years -- new door seal and 2 new thermostats. Now it's time to purchase a new refrigerator. I want to buy a new sidekick, but I'm too worried because of the poor reviews and the lack of a 5 year warranty. I've actually had pretty good luck with it -- it's 14 yrs old, but don't want to spend big money for repairs the first 5 years. Don't want to take the chance.

I purchased the Whirlpool Side kick set around 8 years ago. The refrigerator side went out in less then 4 years. I replaced it and of course they had changed the appearance so the delivery man swapped the door so the 2 units still matched. Within 2 years the second refrigerator started not cooling correctly. On hot humid days, in our central air cooled home, you prevent from opening the refrigerator. Both refrigerators I have had have a cooling issue. The freezer I am happier with but does also have issues. The self defrost pools the water in the bottom of freezer and refreeze prevents draw to pull out and has had banging compressor noise from day 1. I love the size and the look, poor cooling system and quality of usage life. Cost too much to replace every 3 years :(

I have the side kick fridge and freezer and it came in my home when I bought it . Whirlpool This is absolutely the WORST product I have ever dealt with. I am beyond frustrated and completely disappointed. I have gone through TWO of these freezers and THREE refrigerators, and I have had the evaporators repaired at least SIX times. That is completely unacceptable. These fridges are nothing but junk. I would NEVER recommend this brand to anyone, and I will never purchase another one again. And now, once again, my evaporator is out and I’m stuck dealing with yet another repair. This is ridiculous. No customer should have to go through this over and over again. Enough is enough.

Don’t bother with an extended warranty either because they won’t cover it and you’ll be out more money. I’ve been without a fridge for two months now. It was 3 months last time it broke.

We installed our sidekick units 2 years ago. The refrigerator has been serviced three times- finally received a new control panel- it still must be on the coldest setting to stay in the correct temperature range. After several repairs we are told the freezer is unrepairable. We don't want to purchase another Sidekick freezer to match the fridge so we will have to buy two new units as we have no confidence either unity will be reliable. Totally lemons...do not buy these.

Strongly Recommend Not Purchasing

The home builder provided this new with our new home. This and the matchong freezer are poor quality. This refrigerator is 3.5 years old and is unable to keep the temperature even throughout the interior. The produce and meat drawers are freezing and ruining our food. Conversely, our GE Cafe series, 10 years old and in our garage, still functions fine. This Whirlpool was customized to be a side by side with the matching freezer. As built ins go it much shorter then the other brands, thus looks odd. The matching freezer (WSZ57L18DM03) had to have door replaced after one year because it could not hold temperature and had to have the thermometer replaced, as well as the freon. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this refrigerator or the matching freezer. Any repairs we are doing at this point is throwing good money after bad money.

Very disappointed with product

Our 3 year old whirlpool side kick refrigerator developed a freon leak somewhere within the walls and cannot be fixed! We are left with the matching freezer that is currently working. These refrigerators are back ordered for months and I am not sure I want to spend the money on the same unreliable product. Buyer beware!!

Good looks but inneficient

I bought the matching pair 10+ years ago and have had problems with the refrigerator all these years. It leaks water and does not cool property. The repairman suggested a new door but the company did not offer a replacement door. It does not close properly and water comes out from the door too. We had controlled it for a while but it is now coming back again and I have to replace it. The problem is that the new model does not match the old model so I would have to buy the whole unit again.... I don't think I want to risk another long episode of costs, inconveniences and headchaes!

Beautiful set. Focal point in kitchen everyone remarks about it! Refrigerator stopped cooling properly, Coolant leaked out, evaporator doesn't work and compressor needs to be replaced. $1600.00 to repair. We have to do it, they don't make them the same size any longer and freezer is working fine and there is a whole to fill in the kitchen. I think we should get MORE than 5 1/2 years out of a refrigerator. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!

This is the worst appliance I have ever owned. This is an absolute $2k piece of junk. Stay away from this refrigerator at all costs. We have had ours for 3 years, and it has quite working 4 times. Getting sick and tired of paying $125 service charge to have someone come out and look at it, and then fix it (put a bandaid) on it. Not to mention the hundreds of dollars of items that had to be thrown out. Whirlpool should be ashamed of themselves, for robbing people, with this garbage. I know they don’t care though, which is shameful.

Worst refrigerator ever!

Absolute worst appliance we have ever owned! We are on our 3rd one in less than 5 years. Our kitchen cabinets were specifically designed for this model, so we have not been able to get a different model without a remodel. They work fine for about a year and look nice, then just stop cooling. Repair companies will say it’s a leak in the sealed system that they are unable to repair. Whirlpool basically says sorry, but you only had a 1 year warranty.

Had to buy this refrigerator because parts for the Whirlpool sidekick we bought in 2008 were no longer available. Planned obsolescence? No match available. Had to buy both a new sidekick set. Tried Whirlpool again as that is what our local dealer could get. While the refrigerator. now @ six months old, seems to be working okay the dumbest thing about it is the door shelves. This unit as well as the matching sidekick freezer comes with limited door shelves. We ordered additional shelves. However, I challenge anyone at Whirlpool to insert additional shelves in any workable fashion. Much, much wasted space. Very unusual. Very poorly designed. If I could have returned these units, I would have.

Frustrated

I am on my second Side kick, in theory I like it, but my second one is only 2 yrs old and I probably will need a third. The problem is that you have to match the freezer. Third Sidekick purchased in 8 years

This is the third Whirlpool Sidekick we have purchased in eight years. The first two both required service right around the two year mark, and both were deemed unfixable. We built our kitchen cabinets around this specific model. I'm praying it lasts more than two years because if it doesn't, We will remodel our kitchen to fit a different make and model. The Sidekicks are beautiful in design- people compliment them constantly, but they are utterly unreliable.

I bought my home in 2012 and the owners had the double sidekick freezer/fridge set up. I am on my 3rd fridge and they only last about one year before they stop cooling. One repair was under warranty from Whirlpool but then about 6 months after that repair the fridge stopped cooling again. Whirlpool would not stand by the company they hired so now I will be forced to buy my 4th fridge or redesign my kitchen. Biggest mistake ever to use this set up.

We bought our home in July of 2022, and the side kicks were already installed. The fridge compressor went out that November, and the home warranty finally replaced it January of 2023. The new compressor has gone out (December 2024) less than 2 years later. And of course, it’s out of warranty. Whirlpool should stand by their products. I would never buy one again, but it’s built into the wall with a trim kit, so now I’m in a pickle.

Wish I could give negative stars. I bought one of these, like others, stops cooling. Control board replaced 2x, thermister replaced 4x, … and the list goes on and on. And yet again it’s stopped cooling. Whirlpool you should be ashamed - since you stopped making the replacement board… now my lemon refrigerator, is just a lemon that isn’t even repairable.

Sidekicks: Great idea, not good product

I am on my second set of sidekicks. The concept of all refrigeration in large quantity and large freezer in your kitchen is fabulous. Too bad the units didn't hold up. Both sets. And you have to replace both if you want them to match in your kitchen. First set the freezer went bad in four years. Second set, the fridge went bad in three years. Had tech out on each. Did temp repair on both hoping to get by for another year or so. Got six months. I will never buy this product again. I am buying a fridge with freezer on bottom to replace the bad refrigerator. Yes, it won't match but at this point I am about function and not form. And I especially like telling people that come in to my chef's kitchen why my refrigerator and freezer don't match.

not even 2 years old - no longer works

this refrigerator was put in to a newly constructed home. I have been in the home for 1 year and a few months. The refrigerator has a leak in the sealed system and no longer works. I purchased the extended warranty and they can't get anyone to come out to work on it (Butane coolant). I have been without a refrigerator for over four weeks. I live 50 minutes from Whirlpool. That makes no sense! For resolution, they offered to pay me half for the unit and than void my warranty which wasn't cheap either. Why can't they find someone to fix it? why can't they just replace the unit?

poor product

i purchased the freezer and refrigerator, w/ trim kit. the kit does a poor job of marrying the units together as one. i had to remove the quality leveling brackets and install the required plastic one which did a poor job of stabilizing the cabinet. very flimsy feeling when pulling the doors open. i wish i had spent the Extra money and purchased a better product.

Terrible refrigerator

This fridge was purchased in 2021. After three years, the refrigerator just stopped cooling due to line coming in the refrigerator freezing up. This product only comes with one year warranty when most of their other refrigerators come with 2-5 year warranty to cover the sealed refrigeration system. I find it very convenient this specific one is not covered under this warranty as it is on other refrigerators. If you purchase, make sure you to buy extended warranty. I would not recommend this product to anyone.

Let me start out with the fact that my first sidekick set lasted me almost 18 years with only 2 or 3 problems in all that time, so when it finally came time to replace set I naturally went with the same thing. WHAT A BIG MISTAKE!!!! I've only had them for about 3 years and have had to have repair man here at least 4 times for the fridge. I am so disappointed now that I am getting rid of both and going with something else. I was so pleased with the first set and so sad with the second set. I don't understand why Whirlpool had to fix a product that wasn't broken in the first place,

This is our 3rd SideKick in 3 years. This review doesn't even deserve 1 star, much less 5. We just took delivery on our 3rd one, courtesy of Whirlpool. Thank goodness. However, we cannot get it to line up with the freezer, so now we have to find the parts to make it work. The way our kitchen is designed, you cannot put a standard fridge/freezer in the space. It is made especially for the 2 31" units. Which is an absolute nightmare. NEVER AGAIN.

I bought this fridge 7 years ago (along with the sidekick freezer) and it's given me nothing but trouble. The control panel keeps malfunctioning and the evaporator and condenser keep crapping out. I also can't find anyone in my area to repair it because apparently the local techs really don't like working on this particular model. It's been a nightmare and I don't recommend it. I really wish there was a way to repair it, as I hate throwing out such a huge appliance.

LEMON! DO NOT BUY!

This is a lemon, and I hope Whirlpool stops selling this piece of garbage! Ours conked out after 11 months and a few weeks--just shy of the 1-year warranty. We threw out a whole fridge of food and waited 4 weeks while the Whirlpool subcontracted technician had to come back twice because the first fix was not what was wrong. Once he was finally done, we thought we'd gotten out by the skin of our teeth, based on seeing the other reviews. NOPE! 3 months later, it conks out again. Another fridge of food gone. The compressor and seal system are trash. Whirlpool wants to put their fingers in their ears and pretend this isn't their fault since it is out of the one year warranty, even though it was not truly fixed when it was under the one year warranty and their subcontracted technicians did not actually fix the problem. We were so excited to find an all-fridge that fit in our space, since we have two freezers and could really use a full fridge with our family. Now we're looking at the cheapest top-freezer fridge we can afford. Hello back pain and bank pain.

Beware!

This frig was offered in a modular home that we purchased in 2020, didnt get moved in until Dec 2021 because of covid. About 6 months later it quit cooling it was still under warranty, so they sent a repair out he looked it over and said it probably the module ( the brain) can't think of the name, it took it apart the coils were froze, he thaw them out and said he would order a new module and he would be back, didn't have a problem with it he came back replaced the module and said that they have problems with this model. He didn't know why. But hopefully replacing the unit would fix it. Well it worked again for about 6 months, then it stopped cooling again, the warranty had run out. So I took the cover off the coils sure enough they were froze again, so I thawed them out using a hand held steamer, it took about 2 hours, (luckily I have a frig downstairs in the basement that I could transfer my food too until I finished). WELL HERE WE GO AGAIN YESTERDAY IT QUIT COOLING AND I have to remove the cover and thaw out the coils. DO NOT BUY THIS MODEL! I didn't get a bad one as you read the other reviews you will see they are having the same problem. Way to much money to spend on something that quits working in six months and even the repair didn't work. I grew up with whirlpool appliances that's why I was excited to see that they were available. Still do think they are a good company, but they need to fix this issue so it doesn't keep happening. They need to make it right.

The refrigerator and also the freezer have both been broken more than they have worked for the time that I have had them!!!! I have had to have numerous repairs done just had a repair done to the refrigerator yesterday they replaced the compressor and another item and it still does not work. So once again no working refrigerator and having to wait for another repair man to come out and clear my day to be at home for them to look at it and try to figure out what is wrong with it. Refrigerator is under two years old !!!!! very unhappy with the Sidekick refrigerator and the Sidekick freezer!!!!! would highly not recommend to waist your money or your time on this refrigerator and or Freezer!!! The freezer broke within the first seven months it took them Around six months to get it to get the parts it still didn’t work when I called whirlpool they said it was out of warranty and I was out of luck it took many phone calls and emails for them to realize that it had been broken when it was under the warranty and I have been waiting on them to get the parts to fix it. They did give me a new one but it is still having issues luckily I bought an extended warranty on my refrigerator which is currently being worked on. As other reviews have said when we built our house in 2005 we built cabinets around the sidekick refrigerator inside kick Freezer those worked good for about 10 years but these last two that we bought because we needed to put them back in the same spot have been nothing but trouble since day one.

This combo is not worth the material it's made of. I've had 2 of the freezers and 3 fridges now in 15 years. Bought it due to space but I will remodel before I buy another. This current fridge is 2 years old. First off, it is very NOISY. The shelves have metal rods in them that fall out and pitiful plastic shelf stabilizers that fall off. In trying to clean it, these pieces were falling, I tried to catch them and the glass shelf fell off and shattered. DO NOT BUY THIS WHIRLPOOL PRODUCT!!

We received this refrigerator as a replacement of the same model that was absolutely the worst refrigerator we have ever had. In the space of a year the condenser and evaporator had to be replace twice. When it went out for the forth time Whirlpool replaced it with a new. one. It was good to have the replacement just hope this one is better than the first one. The matching freezer that we purchased at the same time as the first one has been fine. What was not covered was the food that was ruined the four times that the first one went bad. Most of the appliances that we have used in the past 60 years have been Whirlpool. This appliance has left a bad taste in our mouths.

Excellent Refrigarator...when it work!

This is our 3rd Side-Kick All-Refrigerator since 2015. We love the roomy space of the unit and it works beautifully...until it breaks down every 4 years. The problem is the compressor broke down, then repaired and a year later the evaporator and controller failed. We were promised it would be repaired and lived without it working for 3 months then told they could not get the part and we had to replace the unit at a great expense to us each time. The same thing happened both times, Problem is our kitchen cabinets were built around this unit so we can't buy another brand 31 inches and matching our Side-Kick Freezer. Very disappointing for an expensive Refrigerator.

Poor Quality

We purchased a refrigerator/ freezer sidekick set 5 years ago for a new home. Since then the freeze has been repaired once and now running well, BUT the refrigerator has been repaired and then replaced once and is now out again after 15 months. Technicians say it is not repairable. Freon leak in wall of frig. Same issue with first one. So we are faced with dilemma of buying a 3rd one in 5 years OR going with a different brand and having to renovate the wall of cabinets where the units are located. Not sure how a company can continually produce such poor quality.

Moved into new home in 2018, since 2021 frig has broken down 3 times. Every time it’s the compressor , relay…. Home warranty will only fix, not replace. Don’t buy this refrigerator. The freezer next to it works well. Too bad food spoils and we have to wait about 10-14 days for parts to arrive. Maybe the frig we have is a LEMON

Strange design

This was the only fridge that would fit in place of my old Kenmore Pro fridge. The Sidekick has a useless pizza sleeve in the door and drawers that can barely hold anything due to the weird shape and split design. The door storage is not very customizable especially considering the butter holder can't open all the way in some configurations and isn't closed completely ever. There's not enough light but it does keep food cold...at least for 1 month. Reviews were scary so I purchased a 5 year plan knowing this will likely not last.

refrigerator ok, sidekick freezer was defective

So far we're not happy with our purchase of the sidekicks. We haven't installed them because the freezer was not working from the get go. It was very noisy when plugged in and upon service call there was a wire harnass stuck in the fan so a wire broke because of this. It has been 2 weeks and this has not been repaired. This could probably have been prevented if there was some quality control before the product was sent out for delivery. As far as the refrigerator goes it appears to be working but we are not going to change our existing sidekick out until we can install both applances. Our existing sidekick refrigeraor is working fine but it is again the freezer that went out. This will be the third set of sidekicks we have had. The freezer is the appliance that goes out. If there was way to swap out the doors of the units so you don't need to replace both appliances so they match that would be a plus. When they are side by side in your kitchen you don't want mismatched appliances. We're also not completely satisfied with the layout of the inside of the refrigerator. We like the layout of the shelves, drawers and door storage better.

Poor Reliability, No Parts Available

I cannot recommend for anyone to buy this refrigerator. 3 weeks ago, it stopped cooling and the repair person said it was the evaporator coil. Naturally, this part is completely unavailable for the repair person to make the repair (and the forecast restock dates are unknown or made up). At first, I was managing with ice chests but now I bought an additional refrigerator to manage my families needs. I wouldn't even be typing this if it just broke because I understand that things break and it seems like a relatively inexpensive fix--BUT I CAN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THERE IS NO PART AVAILABLE. Whirlpool will probably say that it is due to supply chain issues and while that may be partially correct, I would be shocked if they had actually stopped production on NEW complete units. The repair parts are likely just being prioritized for NEW units at the expense of existing owners. Naturally, I am outside of the 1 Year warranty--which also shows a lot of confidence in the product. But warranty or not, the part is not available......

We bought this 2 months ago to replace a ridge that died. This product has poor lighting and drawers that are hard to move and remove to clean but the biggest problem is serious. The product comes with three fixed temp settings. the low is way too low resulting in keeping food too hot. the factory default results in refrigerator temps in the low 40s again leaving food too hot and the high setting results in food near the freezing point (34 degrees) yet you cannot adjust these settings.

I searched high and low to find a nice looking all-fridge, that wasn't Frigidaire or another brand known to be consistently faulty or in my case, catch fire. (only to find out the exact model has been recalled, just not the model number I had!!) So, I thought my parents have had a couple whirlpool items that have lasted over 30 years, lets try them. And hey! this is a cool looking fridge and with 8 kids it was functional and a great size. But..... it didn't even last 5 years!!!! WOW I will NEVER buy another Whirlpool item unless their quality returns to former glory and their corner cutting stops DON"T BUY!! or YOU"LL BE REPLACING

Bought the sidekick refrigerator & freezer about 5 years ago. Like many other reviewers, the refrigerator stopped working and cannot be repaired. Looking at the responses to the reviews by Whirlpool, they would indicate that Whirlpool, is concerned about the quality and reputation of their products and would take responsibility for them. Unfortunately, don't waste your time contacting them. Your will sit on hold for an eternity and then be told that the product is out of warranty and you are on your own. This product has quality problems as evidenced by over half the reviews being negative. However, the company does not seem to care.

Peace of garbage

Bought this piece of trash 18 month ago and it is dead already. It only has a 1 year warranty so this shiny piece of pure stinky garbage cost me more monthly than a compact car ! Someone is coming to check it out tomorrow but after telling him the model he told me it may be very likely to be extremely expensive to fix from his past experience. This thing is basically the Lada of refrigerator. An overpriced price of filth that should not exist. I can not believe it is legal to rip people off like that. Don't buy this sac of ..... Don't even bother with that brand.

The refrigerator evaporator coil iced up 5 times and the unit is under 3 years old. Today no ice on the evaporator coil but it only cools down to 60 degrees. Another load of groceries lost due to a poor quality product.

Had the fridge for just over 5 years and it finally quit cooling completely. Had on and off issues with cooling once in a while but didn't seem like a big deal until it just stopped all together. Appliance repair service said it was leaking and that the cost to fix would not be worth it as these models apparently have issues all the time and would likely need another repair soon. Was advised to just get a new fridge and won't ever buy one of these again.

I made a horrible mistake back in 2003 when I designed a kitchen around the SideKicks. They are the worst product. We are on our 4th one and it just broke down again. Of course it's always just beyond the warranty. Get the extended warranty!!!! I can't believe there isn't a class action lawsuit yet.

Stressed out

I have been in this new home for 2years and on my 2nd side kick fridge, and it just went out again. Had a tech come by today and said it was done, repairs would coast just as mush as a new one.This is BS!!!!!!! I brought in a 15 yr old GE fridge from the garage, that I have never had a problem with, and it is now sitting in the middle of my kitchen till I figure out what to do. Merry Christmas!!!

Looks nice but not functional

I have had this fridge for just about 5 days now. When I first moved all my food from the older model to the new model (same size) I was amazed that the same amount of food took up more space than before. 1) I have 2 fewer shelves on the door, previous version had 5 full length shelves current only has 3, (they are 6 half shelves, so you lose a few inches in the middle) the previous model bottom shelf on the door could hold a bunch of two litters and the top shelf was perfect for cans. The new model is missing both of these features. 2) the inside has 1 fewer shelves, previous had 5 shelves, current has 4 (because they converted one to drawers 3) number of drawers, previous had 2 full size (crisper) and 1 small, new one has 4 full size (crisper) that are bigger than the previous model. One smart thing in the previous model was that you could see through the glass between the bottom shelf and the drawers so you knew what was in there without having to open them. That is now gone, you cannot see the bottom two drawers at all unless you open and that just means whatever goes in there will be forgotten about quicker. 4) The bottom drawers are larger, so if you are throwing junk in there its fine, not great for people who like to be organized and see everything they have 5) the spacing between the shelves is no well done, for example a 20oz bottle can only fit on two shelves in the new model, but could fit on 4 shelves in the old model. The amount of space for the shelves has decreased. 6) the light and control panel is in the in the middle and to the front of the top of the inside of the fridge so you loos that space as well. This could have been put in a better place such as on the outside of the door, or make it smaller. 7) the shelves on the door bump into the shelves, so if you have items on the shelves you cannot put them near the edge or they will get pushed into the fridge, for example i keep a large water container with a spigot that in the old model could rest right on the edge, but in the new model sites 2 inches inside so you have to pull it out and push it back 8) the doors on the hinge side of the door cannot open unless the door is open about 125 degrees because the "pizza holder" sticks out. you may have to redo your build-in or pull the fridge out further to allow extra space for the door to open 9) what is the point of the "pizza holder" it is a waste of space, blocks the drawers from opening and the gap at the bottom of it makes it so it is a wast of space unless you have a box that you can rest on the side, but there are not many items that can do that. I tried a few items, but they would fall out of the bottom 10) The door itself is about 3 inches larger than older models so you need a bit extra room 11) the fridge makes a loud breathing noise, not all the time, but often, not sure what it is for (maybe when it is doing an air exchange), and it may be a defect, I will probably record it and call support to see if it is normal. 12) it is simple to set the temperature, as they have few buttons to push and one says perfect temp Overall I'm disappointed in the product for the price paid when compared to other brands and even other Whirlpool products. They should quickly take this model to the drawing board.

Purchased this set in 2009 for new constructed home, Fridge lost coolant 2013 had it charged then a year later again. Unable to fix so had to order a new fridge 2015, they changed the design so had to buy the freezer so they would match. IN May 2018 the fridge lost coolant again and was able to fix, now 16 months later fridge is not working. Same issue. Planned the kitchen design around these appliances. So I have paid about 7000-8000 in the past 10 years. No More!

I bought and finally paid it off after 4 years and now it's going to the curb after 3 failed attempts to repair it becuase of inaccessible freon leak. WHAT!! After 4 years???!!! No warranty, no recourse, nothing I can do but trash it. No assistance whatsoever from Whirlpool. I refuse to replace it with the same junky quality product from Whirlpool. Freezer will go into the basement. Read and heed the reviews, your unit will breakdown. Don't waste your hard earned money!

I normally would not post a negative review on a website, but I don't want someone else making the same mistake I did. I want to start off by saying the refrigerator looks amazing and we really like it when it works. The freezer has been amazing since we purchased it with no problems. They really do look great together and guest talk about how much they like them all of the time. However, it is the refrigerator and the customer service that we have not been thrilled with. We are currently waiting on our 4th factory replacement in less than 4 years. Bought first one in 2017, never worked and was immediately replaced. Second worked until October of 2018, repairman came out and tried to repair but after a couple failed attempts decided it needed replacing. Third refrigerator worked until September of 2019, September 8th to be exact. First repairman came out in about 4 days and ordered part. Part came in and he attempted repair one week later. Fridge cooled for about 30 minutes then we got the dreaded over temperature alarm. This repairman said he would recommend replacing fridge to whirlpool. Well, whirlpool wanted a second opinion. I guess because they don't trust the people they pay to repair their machines. Second repairman comes out and says the first guy didn't know what he was doing and he could fix it no problem all he had to do was order the correct parts. So he orders the parts and we wait another week for part to come in and repairman to come back and fix it. By the time he comes back we are sitting at 4 weeks without a fridge. And guess what, it doesn't work and he recommends ordering a replacement. Basically we wasted two weeks there, when the first guy recommended the same thing. When whirpool calls the following week, because evidently they can only come to my house on a Thursday or Friday, we are told it will be 14 business days before they can get the replacement to my house. We finally get email confirmation that they will be here on Nov 8th. So we have gone 2 months without this thing working. I completely understand things taking time, but when a customer spends the amount of money this fridge costs, plus pays for extended warranty and has gone through the problems that we have, you would think they could be a little inclined to expedite delivery or go out of their way to make this experience a little easier. I really don't understand why this process should take this long. I guess I should be thankful at least it is still under the extended warranty. Unlike some of the reviews that I have read. This experience has made me never want to purchase another Whirlpool product.

Don't buy!!!

I am now on my second model of this frig. Our cabinets were built around this unit so I am stuck with something equivalent to this size. I discovered the death of the first frig when we returned from a trip to Disney.... lost everything!!! My current one started leaking out the front. Found the drain line was stopped up... fixed that. But now it fluctuates in temperature so much I am losing contents. I do not want to go back with the same brand. I know this is a whirlpool site but does anyone have a suggestion of a different brand? It is ridiculous to have to replace this unit every 4 years!!! Who can afford to do that?????

Fridge stopped cooling after only 2 years

We bought the fridge/freezer combo through our homebuilder. The fridge stopped cooling after 2 years, causing the alarm in the fridge to go off repeatedly. We hired repairmen to look at the issue. They said the fridge is leaking freon and cannot locate where the leaking is taking place. Although they added more freon they warned us we may have to replace the fridge. We are very disappointed that we spent so much money on a fridge only to have it fail with only 2 years of gentle use. The freezer is fine. We have a Haier fridge that we've used for 20 years and has never broke down. The quality of this Sidekick fridge is subpar!

Will not fit

I have a set of Sidekicks from 2011. The freezer is fine, never had a problem. The refrigerator has been an issue since the day it went out of warranty! We have nursed the fridge for 5 years and finally decided to just get a new one. The new "improved" version of the same model does not match the old one. The door handle is in a different spot and shaped differently. Also, the door, which was made deeper to accommodate a "pizza door" (stupid idea) will not open in our built in cabinets and cannot be swapped with the old door. So we are left with the dilemma, redo our custom cabinets and buy a new SET of sidekicks, upgrade to a more expensive Sub Zero type brand (which still won't fit in our built in space), go with a different style all together....

Freezer had a frost problem because a wire in it was not connected. 2 years after, fridge stopped working and had to force whirlpool to repair it. Was always freezing if set too low after that. Then fridge died recently, after not even 6 years of usage. DO NOT BUY!!|!

Broken fridge and nothing to replace it

Not happy with this fridge. It was built into our cabinets along with the freezer. First, the ice maker in the freezer only works intermittingly. Atleast they are able to fix the ice maker. However despite paying for a 3 year warranty I was told today that my fridge is no longer able to be repaired because the part is no longer available. I therefore will need to purchase a brand new fridge that likely will not match the freezer perfectly. Very disappointing especially since we have been a long time Whirlpool customer.

Chef's home Kitchen Refrigerator

The previous whirlpool refrigerator leaked constantly and no one could repair it. This was the only one that fit my kitchen that was designed around the previous whirlpool specifications. The new layout is NOT useful I lost condiment shelves on the door. The pizza rack is of no use for a chef or home cook who does not use prepared pizza. The large shelf on the door is too tall. We do not drink soda. We need space for milk and cream and then the smaller shelf for condiments. The extra veggie keepers took away shelf space. I am constantly moving things to find something. Unfortunately this is the only one that fits my kitchen. It keeps things cold looks nice but the configuration is terrible!!

This refrigerator is far and away the worst purchase I have ever made. First unit didn't work when it was delivered. Second unit lasted 4 months before it stopped working due to what appears to be a freon leak. More than $300 in food ruined. After reading reviews on other sites this appears to be a regular occurrence. They will replace it with another faulty unit that breaks and spoils more food. Obviously this is either a known design flaw or consistently poor manufacturing.

I bought the all-refrigerator and matching all-freezer. First, the fridge rattled from day one; told it would stop when it was installed and leveled - NOT. The whirlpool repairman told us he probably wouldn't be able to fix the rattle but if we wanted to pay our kitchen installer again to pull it out he would try. The freezer and fridge doors were not the same height and not adjustable so installer had to lift one unit to make the doors level (although the base units are not level). We bought the kit to put above and below the units to make it look like one unit - top piece fine but the bottom piece does not attach like the instructions indicate so we had to tape it on(yes, scotch tape). NOW, everything in my crispers freeze and ice builds up behind the crispers.

Having regrets!!

8 Years ago I outfitted my kitchen with all Whirlpool Gold appliances. 3 yrs ago, my microwave started falling apart, a year ago, this fridge unit started leaking water and would not stay cold on a consistant basis, 3 weeks ago it broke down completley. 2 months ago, one of the burners on my electric stove went out. So I am impressed with Whirlpool Gold?? Not one bit. I have custom cabinets built around this fridge/freezer unit and have water damage to the cabinets because of it. Even when the repair man came out, he had nothing good to say about this unit. I thought i was buying high quality appliances hence "GOLD". I feel that for the amount of money, my microwave, stove top and fridge should have lasted alot longer than 8 years tops.
