Bands map to perceived loudness ranges in the EPA Levels Document (1974). Manufacturer dB ratings follow IEC 60704 (1 m, anechoic chamber).

  1. 01

    Loudness bands

    <30: whisper. 30–40: very quiet. 40–45: quiet. 45–50: moderate. 50–60: noticeable. 60+: loud.

  2. 02

    Room thresholds

Bedroom: <40 dB (EPA recommends sleep <35). Office: <45. Living: <50. Kitchen: <50. Utility: <60.

  3. 03

    Logarithmic perception

Each +10 dB ≈ 2× perceived loudness. A 50 dB fridge sounds twice as loud as 40 dB, even though it's only 25% higher numerically.

  4. 04

    Real-world adjustment

Hard floors and tile add 2–5 dB to the spec sheet number. Soft cabinets and rugs absorb. Plan accordingly.
